Inside: What to do in New York City in the Winter; Planning your winter NYC trip; budgeting for your New York City trip

One of my favorite trips we have ever taken was to NYC in the Winter. New York is one of my favorite places in the world and we had an amazing trip visiting some friends that live there (and going to their wedding!).

Even the freezing cold couldn’t damper the fun that we had! I am sharing some of my favorite things to experience in New York City in the winter. This isn’t necessarily a “Christmas” list because we missed most of the Christmasy stuff!

Know Before You Go

Here are a few tips when planning your trip to New York City in the Winter months

Dress For The Weather

The weather in the Winter months will be chilly, and you’ll need to dress for the weather! A winter coat, hat, mittens or gloves, scarf and warm boots will be ideal. Waterproof coat and boots will keep you extra cozy!

The temperatures in December, January and February can range from 7*C to -3*C (45*F -27*F). However it can feel colder with wind chill and get especially cold in the night.

Prices May Be Higher Around Christmas

New York City is expensive, but it will be extra expensive around the Holidays. Plan accordingly! Need help budgeting your trip? Check out my post about how to make a travel budget

How Many Days Do I Need There?

I would recommend spending at least 3 days in NYC to see and do the highlights!

New York Winter Activities

Museums

I LOVE museums, and some of my favorite are in New York City! There are so many to choose from so you can go to the one that interests you the most. Most museums are large and you can spend most of the day in one. On this past visit we visited the MET, but we have previously visited MOMA, and the Museum of Natural History. I am looking forward to checking out the Transportation museum on our next trip!

The New York Public Library

If you are a book lover like I am, you’ll love this building! The library is beautiful, especially when it’s still decorated for the holidays. If you’re also a Disney fan make sure to head down to the children’s section to check out the original Winnie the Pooh and friends. These are the stuffed animals that AA Milne wrote the books based on!

Walk Through Central Park

Look I know it’s so cold but I loved taking a little walk through the park in the snow. We’ve also taken the horse and carriage ride around the parks and loved it!

Rockefeller Center

The rink here is iconic. We didn’t skate because 1.expensive and 2.long lines! But I liked watching people skate while checking out the famous Christmas tree! If you decide to go up to the Top of the Rock, I think it’s the best view in NYC – yes better than the Empire State Building because you can SEE the Empire State Building!

See A Show

Of course when you’re in NYC you need to check out a show! Off or on Broadway there is no shortage of amazing entertainment. We checked out Chicago on our last trip. We bought discounted tickets at the TKTS booth in Times Square.

NYC is such a great place to go for a girls trip! A show is a must do!

Grand Central Station

I love Grand Central, It’s such a lovely place to stand and people watch, and ceiling watch. I seriously love the ceiling in here.

Eat, Drink and be Merry!

I LOOOVVEE eating in NYC. My favorite place from our last trip was Spice. I’m still dreaming about the lemongrass chicken almost a year later! I can’t list all the delicious places to eat or we’ll be here all day. My one regret is not getting a hot chocolate at Max Brenner’s!

(Pretty much) Anything you can do in the summer!

We walked the Brooklyn Bridge in the freezing cold! Just bundle up and get out there.

Do you have any great ideas on what to do in New York City in the winter?

  5. I normally tend to avoid Midtown unless I need to buuuut I will make an exception to see the tree at the Rockefeller Center. I love going around midnight…and am always amazed at how crowded it still is!
