Indoor Things To Do In Halifax
It’s Winter! It’s freezing cold and snowing here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. If you’re looking for something inside to do this winter, or even a rainy day in the future (positive temperatures come back eventually, right?!), here is my list of fun things to do around the HRM.

Games and Activities For The Whole Family:
Escape Room
I LOVE these! I have been to several around Halifax and other cities. They’re definitely more fun with a bigger group (4-8 people), but there are a few rooms that are good for two people as well. I don’t have kids, but I think it could be fun with kids, too! Here are a few around Halifax:
- Mind Hack Room Escape: 475 Sackville Dr, Lower Sackville, NS and 110 Woodlawn Road, Dartmouth, NS
- Captured Escape Rooms: 1684 Barrington St, Halifax, NS
Discovery Centre
1215 Lower Water St, Halifax, NS
The Discovery Centre has been a staple in Halifax for many years. If you’ve got kids, or if you’re a kid at heart like me, it’s a great place to spend the afternoon learning while having fun. Be sure to visit the Dome Theatre, it’s amazing!
Activate Halifax
72 Finnian Row, Dartmouth, NS
For the young and young-at-heart, head to Activate for their interactive games. Each game room is a micro-arena for you and your friends to jump, climb, problem-solve and laugh through games.
Get Air
612 Windmill Rd, Dartmouth, NS
How much fun is an indoor trampoline park?! I haven’t been to Get Air yet, but I know several families with kids who love going.
Board Room Game Café
1256 Barrington St, Halifax, NS
I seriously love this place! I grew up in a huge board game family. The Board Room has tons of games to choose from, along with yummy food and drinks – including alcoholic and specialty coffees. They have staff who can teach you how to play a game or suggest one for your group. It’s so easy to kill a few hours here.
Putting Edge Mini Golf
182 Chain Lake Dr, Halifax, NS
I also grew up in a big mini golf family! I’ve been to Putting Edge many times and always had fun! It’s super kid (and adult) friendly. There is also an arcade for those who wish to play.
Bowling
Bowling always makes me feel like a kid again! It is so much fun. Many locations around HRM:
Bowlarama: 3459 Desmond Avenue, Halifax NS, 31 Atlantic Street, Dartmouth NS, 16 Dentith Road, Spryfield NS
Thinking Ceramic
5640 Spring Garden Rd, Suite 202, Halifax, NS
If you’ve ever painted pottery (RIP Clay Cafe), you know that hours go by without you noticing. There’s something fun and therapeutic about painting. We’ve done mugs, travel mugs and our dog’s dishes! At Thinking Ceramic, you can paint pottery or try handbuilding a project. Walk-ins are welcome; there’s no need to book in advance.
Check Out the Events at Halifax Central Library
5440 Spring Garden Rd, Halifax, NS
Besides being a great place to sit and read on a dreary day, the beautiful Halifax Central Library hosts many events for all ages. The offerings change often, so be sure to check the schedule, but you can expect everything from drop-in craft workshops for adults and children to lectures on how to plan your garden, to dance lessons and movies. The best part? These events are free!
Rock Climbing
Want to do something active but inside? Try some rock climbing! I haven’t gotten brave enough to try this myself yet, but maybe someday. Seven Bays Bouldering has three locations in HRM: 114 Chain Lake Drive in Bayers Lake, 2019 Gottingen Street in Halifax, and 201 Brownlow in Dartmouth.
Axe Throwing
Axe throwing is so much fun to do with a group of people! It’s technically a sport, with leagues to join, but you can book an hour and learn how to throw axes with your friends!
HaliMac Axe Throwing: 1920 Brunswick St, Halifax NS (family friendly, ages 10+)
Timber Lounge: 16 Portland Street, Dartmouth, NS (19+)
Museums:
Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity
1355 Oxford St, Halifax, NS (Dalhousie University)
Halifax’s first aquarium, Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity, opened in 2026 at Dalhousie University! I haven’t visited yet, but it looks like an amazing spot to learn about the amazing marine diversity here in Nova Scotia.
The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
1675 Lower Water St, Halifax NS
If you’re interested in The Titanic, the Halifax Explosion or just maritime history, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is the place for you! Fun fact: this is Canada’s oldest and largest maritime museum.
Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21
1055 Marginal Road, Halifax, NS
Come learn about Canadian immigrants and what it was like to come into Canada between 1928 and 1971 at Pier 21. It’s even more interesting if you can follow your family history. They make the exhibits interactive and fun for everyone!
Museum of Natural History
1747 Summer St, Halifax, NS
I have loved every natural history museum I have visited, including Halifax’s. At the Museum of Natural History, you can meet Gus, the 103-year-old Gopher Tortoise, learn about the natural wonders of Nova Scotia, and chat with a naturalist in the learn lab. Be sure you check out their daily and special events. They often have fun things going on (one time I met a sloth!).
Art Gallery of Nova Scotia
1723 Hollis Street, Halifax, NS
I love visiting the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. It’s just the right size; big enough that you can see plenty of art, but not so big that you get overwhelmed or bored. For me, the best part is seeing the fully restored Maud Lewis house!

Food and Entertainment:
Sports Games
Halifax is home to many sports teams that play year-round. We love taking in a few Halifax Thunderbirds lacrosse games each year, but you can also see the Halifax Mooseheads play hockey at the Scotiabank Centre.
If soccer is your thing, Halifax Tides FC and HFX Wanderers FC play at the Wanderers Grounds in downtown Halifax. For basketball fans, the Halifax Hoopers play in Dartmouth at the Zatzman Sportsplex in Dartmouth.
Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market
1209 Marginal Road, Halifax, NS
The Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market is a Halifax staple! This huge indoor market has everything you could want! Come hungry because the food is delicious. The market is open 7 days a week and all year, but Saturday is the big day with the most vendors.
Grafton St Dinner Theatre
1741 Grafton St, Halifax, NS
I have been to the Grafton Street Dinner Theatre three times, and every single time I’ve had so much fun I want to join them on stage. Seriously. The food is also delicious! Can’t get much better than a dinner and a show all in one.
Neptune Theatre
1593 Argyle St, Halifax, NS
I have been to countless performances at Neptune Theatre and have never left disappointed. The theatre is gorgeous and comfortable. Shows go on mostly all year. Budget tip: We always sit at the back of the balcony. Yes, they are the cheapest seats, but in such a small theatre, there are no bad seats!
Wellness and Relaxation
Nature Folk
90 Alderney Drive, Dartmouth, NS
If you’re craving a Nordic spa experience without being out in the elements, Nature Folk is an excellent choice. Located in the historic former Dartmouth City Hall, spend the day enjoying their thermal circuit, rotating between their pools, Finnish saunas and infrared sauna at your own pace.
The Wine Spa
1447 Hollis Street, Halifax, NS
Spend a rainy or snowy day at Halifax’s only social spa–perfect for a girls’ day out! At the Wine Spa, you can book their signature Wine Spa Experience, which includes your choice of two of the following services: manicure, pedicure or makeup, paired with a 6-ounce comparative wine tasting and swag bag for $200. You can also book
Final Thoughts
We have so many indoor things to do in Halifax, you really can’t be bored! I love checking out museums and grabbing a bite to eat on a chilly or rainy day.
